U.S. UNDER SECRETARY OF DEFENCE ON TWO-DAY VISIT TO MALAYSIA

KUALA LUMPUR, April 19 (Bernama) -- US Under Secretary of Defence for Policy Michele Flournoy is currently in Malaysia for a two-day visit, which began yesterday.

According to a statement from the US embassy, Malaysia is her first stop on a visit which also includes a stop in Singapore.

"Ms Flournoy's visit is the latest in a series of visits by high-level officials of the Obama administration to Malaysia, to discuss bilateral issues and regional security, and to reaffirm the United States' commitment to engagement with Malaysia and the region," it said.

During her visit, Flournoy is scheduled to meet senior-level officials on a number of bilateral, regional and global security issues.

She was confirmed by the US Senate to her current position on Feb 9 last year, which required her to serve as the principal staff assistant and advisor to the Secretary of Defence and the Deputy Secretary of Defence for matters including formulation of the national security and defence policy.

Prior to her confirmation, Flournoy was appointed as the president of the Center for a New American Security, which she co-founded, in January 2007.

She has also served as a senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, where she worked on a broad range of defence policy and international security issues.
